| THE CLOCK CHAMBER
The Giralda's first clock was inaugurated in the presence of the king in the midst of a great storm on 20 June, 1400. All that is left of is is the bell, made by Alonso Domínguez, which is set inside the so-called "body of the clock".
The clock displayed in this sixth chamber has an inscription that tells its own story which reads somethink like this:
"THIS CLOCK WAS BEGUN TO BE BUILT WITHIN THE WALLS OF THIS HOLY PATRIARCHAL CHURCH OF SEVILLE IN THE MONTH OF JANUARY 1757 AND WAS FINISHED IN THE MONTH OF DECEMEMBER 1764 (...) BEGINNING AND ENDING THIS WORK WAS FRAY JOSEPH CORDERO LAY BROTHER OF THE REGULAR OBSERVANCE OF OUR HOLY FATHER SAN FRANCIS SON OF THE PROVINCE OF SEVILLE AND ABIDING IN THE GREAT BUILDING OF THIS CITY OF SEVILLE, GUIDED BY THE AID OF THIS MOST PURE LADY".
José Cordero declares his pride in being Spanish on the dial of the clock, and notes the date it was finished. The clock was working until the 1960s. |
